Energy Price Drivers and Costs in Energy-Intensive Industries

CMIA member Navigant provides cross-sectoral analysis in new report for the European Commission.

The European Commission has released a new report informing on the composition and drivers of energy prices and costs in energy-intensive industries. Navigant experts prepared the report together with the project leading Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS).

Based on data collected from 189 plants over a 10-year period (2008-2017), the study shows energy prices and costs borne by EU producers operating in 11 energy intensive subsectors: bricks and roof tiles, wall and floor tiles, glass tableware, packaging glass, aluminium (primary, secondary, and downstream), steel (electric arc and basic oxygen furnace), nitrogen fertilizers and refineries.

The results provide well-grounded, bottom-up evidence of the composition and drivers of energy prices and energy costs faced by industrial operators in EU energy intensive sectors. The team also assessed the impact of energy prices and costs on the cost competitiveness and, where possible, international competitiveness of EU energy intensive sectors.
