CMIA, IETA and Ecosphere+ present Carbon Pricing Award

11th November 2016 by CMIA

CMIA is delighted to partner with IETA and Ecosphere+ to present the first 2016 Carbon Pricing Champion Award to the International Civil Aviation Organization. Jane Hupe, Chief of the Environmental Unit in ICAO’s Air Transport Bureau and the Secretary of ICAO’s Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP), accepted the award in a ceremony at COP22 in Marrakesh yesterday evening. Last month in Montreal, ICAO member nations agreed to create the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), the world’s first global, sectoral carbon pricing system. The agreement was the culmination of years of work, and sets a goal for the aviation industry worldwide of carbon-neutral growth from 2020 onwards.

Since it’s inception CMIA has advocated for a clear and meaningful price on carbon on behalf of its members. Ecosphere+ is a new venture founded by CMIA member organisation Althelia Climate Fund, to grow markets that put a value on carbon and incentivise sustainable business models, making Ecosphere+ the perfect partner for us to highlight those organisations and individuals that are making a significant contribution to that goal. A price on carbon, backed up with action to reduce and mitigate greenhouse gas footprints, can deliver catalytic funding to projects and programmes that will deliver the low carbon transformation needed to keep climate change below the two-degree target established under the Paris Agreement.

Carbon mitigation through natural sequestration is amongst the most cost effective mitigation options as well as having the potential to deliver the most significant scale reductions in the near term. Althelia’s Climate Fund’s projects are already delivering impressive results that empower its partners to effectively manage their climate, regulatory and financial risks, enhance their brand value and contribute to the evolution of the global climate change regime. Lisa Walker, CEO of Ecosphere+ has been a catalyst for climate change action both within the companies she has worked and across sectoral partnerships. CMIA is proud to count Althelia Ecosphere+ among its global membership and for its support of this important award.
