More about CMIA
Acting as an advocate for the carbon markets industry, CMIA works with decision makers, opinion formers and the media, representing members' views on carbon market issues, and engaging in the policy debate and formation process.
Providing support for the global trading rules and arbitration facilities, working on training, promotion, standardisation and cooperation with other carbon trade and arbitral bodies, CMIA membership offers:
A structured forum for discussion with policy makers
Third Party representation
Government representation
Active social club and networking arena
Service providers directory
Opportunities to exhibit
Speaking opportunities
Discounts for conferences and events
What distinguishes CMIA from other trade associations is that it provides a unique opportunity to be part of an industry grouping in the field of climate change that is solely there to represent organisations in the service sector, as opposed to large emitters with compliance obligations under a cap-and-trade system.
Policy Working Groups
CMIA currently has eleven active Policy Working Groups. Working with the UK Government, the European Commission, the US Government and the UNFCCC, as well as NGOs and business groupings, the CMIA Policy Streams are:
1) Post-2012 Institutional Reform
2) Flexible Mechanisms
3) Regulatory Oversight
4) EU ETS Policy
5) North American Policy
6) Voluntary Markets
7) Taxation
8) Aviation & Maritime
9) Land Use and Forestry
10) Low-Carbon Technology
11) Australasia
Working on private sector issues in the Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation, as well as on post-2012 policy, CMIA is also working with the European Commission on the launch of its climate change review 2008 and with the European Parliament.
CMIA Events
CMIA is pleased to announce the launch of Carbon TradeEx America, which is set to become the leading North American Trade Show and Conference for the carbon markets. Working with Koelnmesse, organisers of Carbon Expo, Carbon TradeEx will provide a live communication platform for Association, Government, and Industry to exchange ideas, business contacts, technology and services for a carbon based economy.

International Negotiations
CMIA regularly hosts events with key policy makers. At COP/MOP 3 in Bali, CMIA held side events with the UK government on the future of CDM in the developing world and with the Asian Development Bank on finance flows in the carbon markets. Forty CMIA members attended the climate change talks as part of a CMIA delegation, as CMIA has official observer status with UNFCCC.
In 2007 CMIA co-hosted an International Carbon Markets Conference with the UK Treasury, which saw companies and finance ministry officials from around the world come together to listen to public and private sector speakers including Lord Stern, author of the Stern Report. The event also launched the UK Carbon Markets Expert Group, which firmly placed carbon finance in the UK government's economic policy hierarchy.
Helping increase positive awareness of the role of emissions trading in tackling climate change, CMIA works closely with the media, as well as international NGOs, keeping them informed about policy development and the role of carbon markets.
CMIA Governance and Structure
The CMIA governance structure comprises an Executive Committee with a President, two Vice-Chairs and a Treasurer. At present CMIA's President is Abyd Karmali, Head of Global Carbon Markets at Merrill Lynch. Vice Chair for Communications is Richard Folland of JPMorgan and Vice Chair for Policy is Matthew Whittell of Climate Exchange. CMIA Treasurer is Sandy Nicolson of KPMG, and Director of Communications and Public Policy is Adam Nathan.
